S2 EP8: The Gut-Brain Connection with Alok Madan, PhD, MPH

HHCI Season 2 Episode 8

In today’s episode, we welcome Alok Madan, PhD, MPH, a clinical health psychologist with more than 20 years of experience developing clinical research and educational programs to improve the quality of care for individuals with chronic medical conditions and serious mental illness.

For today’s topic, we will be discussing the gut-brain connection, which has become a hot topic in recent years, capturing the interest of researchers and the public alike. This fascinating relationship between our digestive system and our brain reveals how closely linked our physical and mental health truly are.

For example, the gut microbiome, a vast community of bacteria living in our intestines, plays a pivotal role in this connection. Changes in gut bacteria can affect brain function and behavior, influencing mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress. Maintaining a healthy gut is essential for supporting overall mental and emotional well-being.
